Don’t Bore Me Writing Lame Storytelling About PASSION — Feel the JOY of LIFE Instead

Let’s Talk Passion (Or Not?)

Hey there, wonderful people! So, here I am, jumping into the ever-revolving door of the ‘Follow Your Passion’ advice. Feels a bit like 2005.

Look, I get it. Passion can be this elusive holy grail that everyone’s chasing after like it’s the lost treasure of Atlantis. We’ve been bombarded by well-meaning bloggers and coaches telling us that passion is the secret sauce to living our best lives. But let’s be honest for a second – is it?

I recently did some digging on Medium and found a refreshing perspective—more folks are coming out to debunk the myth that passion alone is the key to success. THANK GOODNESS.

Passion is not the magical ticket to your dream life or a cure-all for your woes. Let’s shift the narrative, shall we?

Here’s a thought: Instead of paying a hefty fee to find your ‘passion’ (unless you’ve been on a dopamine rollercoaster since your early 20s), why not just… live? Engage in activities that naturally make you feel alive. It could be as simple as enjoying a joyful moment with loved ones or discovering a new hobby. Maybe even just, dare I say it, getting laid.

Passion, in its raw essence, is merely a powerful emotion—be it joy, anger, or love. It connects us to our ‘why’ and fuels our journey through life’s hurdles. But it’s not enough to talk about passion; it must be felt deeply.

Focus on these positive sensations: Awe, Confidence, Contentment, Courage, Curiosity, Ecstasy, Euphoria, Excitement, Gratitude, Happiness, Hope, Interest, Joy, Love, Pleasure, Pride, Relief, Satisfaction, Self-confidence, Surprise, Trust, Wonder, Zeal, Zest. Find three that resonate with your recent experiences.

Remember, success is not just about passion. It’s about understanding your motivations, embracing positive emotions, and living life on YOUR terms.

So, what does passion feel like to you? Let’s hear it (no sexually explicit details, please). And hey, if you think I’m off my rocker or hitting the mark, let me know. I’m all about that direct, witty banter without the sprinkle of ‘Social Work-y’ formalities.

In love and passion (or a bit of both),

Daniel & Ibrahim

P.S. Live, love, and learn a life that’s unapologetically YOURS.

Sadly there’s a mountain of well-intended passion poop across the blogosphere. Why is that? So little on the subject is earth-shattering news unless you’re from the village of Pollyanna or new to the planet.

Could it just be me? Have I evolved so much over the years that I’m utterly bored with the subject? (As I am with many over-published topics these days.)

Let’s Shift

There is value in defining passion simply. But for Allah’s sake, don’t pay some life coach (or therapist) to help you find passion unless you’re a recovering addict who can’t feel excited anymore because you’ve damaged your brain’s ability to produce dopamine-sorting coke up your nose since you were 21. But I digress.

Spend your money on something that will elicit a powerful feeling (naturally). Or better yet, get laid—there, I said it! Class dismissed.

passion - păsh′ən noun

  • A firm or powerful emotion.
  • A powerful emotion, such as anger or joy.
  • A state of intense sexual desire or love.

There you have it; end the story now, go out, play with the other mortals, and have fun BEING alive.

One does not talk about passion; one feels passion. So stop talking and start feeling—got it, my friend?

Passion connects you to your ‘why.’ It’s the force that powers your ability to overcome obstacles. Passion is a feeling - positive or negative. It’s cravings and aversions.

Wait, Daniel-Ibrahim. Did you say earlier that talking about passion is BS? So why are you talking about passion now? Fair enough. Let me segue into the topic of emotions.

Feelings, as a subjective representation of emotions, are often private to the individual experiencing them. However, emotion is often the driving force behind motivation, whether positive or negative.

Perhaps coaches talk about passion because it’s a powerful motivator, and they figure talking about what motivates you is the solution to getting you off your sorry ass. -I can say that because I’ve been there and done that often.

Capture the physical sensations in your body related to what you’re feeling now. Perhaps journal your answers and look for patterns (keener).

Creative Path Action Strategies; Feel The Joy!

THE BIG PICTURE

Explore New Activities

Identify activities that naturally bring you joy and make you feel alive. Consider engaging in new hobbies or spending quality time with loved ones.

Reflect on Emotions

Focus on experiencing and understanding a range of positive emotions such as Awe, Confidence, Contentment, and Joy. Select three emotions from the list that resonate with your recent experiences and explore them further.

Journal Your Feelings

Start a journal to record physical sensations related to your current emotions. Look for patterns in your feelings to understand what motivates you.

Evaluate Motivations

Reflect on your motivations for activities and passions. Ensure they are aligned with positive emotions and not solely ego-driven.

Balance Passion and Life

Prevent burnout by maintaining balance and not obsessing over one particular outcome or activity. Reflect on your work-life balance and ensure you live on your terms.

Seek Feedback

Request feedback on your perspective about passion from peers or a community. Engage in discussions to see if others find your ideas inspiring and relevant.

Express Your Passion

Share how you express and feel your passions, perhaps through a creative outlet like a blog post or video. Encourage others to share their expressions of joy positively and respectfully.

Mindful Personal Development

Use positive sensations as a cornerstone for personal development and goal setting. Focus on the joy of experiences rather than material possessions or social status.

In the world of tales where passions burn,

There lies a truth we all must learn.
Enough of stories worn and old,
Of passions told, but hearts left cold.

Let’s find instead the joy of life,
In simple things, away from strife.
For passion’s but a fleeting flame,
A powerful force, yet just a name.

Feel the breeze on a sunny day,
Dance in the rain, come what may.
Laugh with friends till your sides do ache,
Savor each bite of the meals you make.

For joy is found in moments small,
In the gentle rise and the silent fall,
Of days that pass with love and grace,
In simple joys we each embrace.

Do not chase the elusive dream,
Of passion as life’s greatest theme.
Instead, live boldly, love and give,
Find the joy in the act to live.

So here’s to life, with all its zest,
Embrace the moments you love the best.
For in the end, it’s joy we seek,
With every heartbeat, every beat.

My passion looks and feels like this: show the world yours.

Here’s a video I created a few years ago. As you’ll see, I’m passionate about my sailboat, which is expressed as a sense of joy.

As an aside, I had a blast producing this piece on Apple’s Final Cut Pro Application.

“I’ve shown you my sense of joy; now, feel free to show me yours (No dirty pics, eh!)  ~ Daniel-Ibrahim.

How do you express what you love? What sensations do you feel? This is what joy feels like - embrace more of it.

It’s my life, and I’ll live it on my terms. I’m blessed enough to do what I want, when I want, with who I want, the way I want, for the reasons I want, as long as I do so with love and integrity.

We often use the word passion in a positive context for personal development, goal setting and finding one’s real purpose. But in reality, you can select any intense emotion and talk about passion.

Positive sensations are a critical element of any successful journey. To succeed, you must understand the dynamics of your cravings and aversions. What makes you tick?

Too much of one sensation is a deep, sometimes overwhelming emotion that can make you lack reasoning and get you in trouble.

Positive sensations will help you go above and beyond the call of duty in any battle. Experiencing positive emotions is more important than pursuing money because these emotions bring joy into your life.

Positive sensations are why you do what you do, not what you own or control.

Embrace a warm, joyful sensation, and you’ll be motivated toward instead of away from something.

Misguided passion, such as a crime of passion or irrationality, short-sightedness, blind outbursts, fanaticism, compulsive thinking, rage, and overreaction, is unhealthy—but I’m sure you knew that.

When any emotion becomes an obsession, you are OUT of balance. This imbalance can lead to burnout at work, not to mention alienating your friends and family.

In addition, obsessing over everything you do will trap you in blinders, causing you to focus only on the result at all costs—not cool.

‘Without my work, I am nothing’ - Oh really? How’s that working for you? Be mindful that you don’t end up so wrapped up in an outcome that you lose sight of the bigger picture. Do you live to work or work to live?

Ask yourself why you love something (or someone) so much. It’s ok to find this thing you love rewarding and joyful. However, if you are chasing an ego boost or social status, that’s not a good thing.

Getting lost in something (I lost all track of time) is fine, but ask yourself, ‘What else am I besides ‘this, and what other parts of my life do I care about?’

We aim to push a few emotional buttons now and again and get you thinking beyond convention or tradition about living, loving, and learning to live proudly on your terms.

By the way, how did I do?

Let me know if this piece was another lame piece about passion or if I presented a twist that was more inspiring and pleasant to read.

I’m trying to sound less Social Work or Life coach-y these days, but it can be challenging given the clients I’ve had to appease in the past.

I love (passionately) a more direct, witty sense of openness in my voice. People appreciate less formality and a more conversational blogging style here.
